FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- DEERFIELD, Ill., April 21, 2009 – Walgreens is recalling Deerfield Farms Mediterranean Fruit and Nut blend sold in stores from March 5, 2009 to April 21, 2009. The product manufacturer notified Walgreens that some of the Mediterranean fruit and nut blend may contain pistachios from Setton Pistachios of Terra Bella. Setton is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of pistachios. Though Walgreens is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.
Walgreens has already instructed its stores to stop selling the following product:

DEERFIELD FARMS MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT AND NUT BLEND 10OZ 04902245444
Walgreens takes the safety of its customers seriously and is working with the FDA on this recall. For additional information, please contact Walgreens Product Quality department at 847-315-2755, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central time. Customers who purchased the recalled products should discontinue use immediately and return items to Walgreens for an exchange or refund.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Website at http://www.cdc.gov.
