Something Better Natural Foods Conducts Nationwide Recall of Products With Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk

Brian Metcalf
269.965.1199 ext. 102
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 11, 2009 -- Something Better Natural Foods of Battle Creek, MIis recallingthe peanut-containing products listed below, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled products were sold nationwide retail stores and direct to consumers by United Parcel Service delivery.
The products were packaged in boxes or bulk bags. The lot numbers affected include all lot numbers that end with the number 8. Also included are any lot numbers that contain the Code Q88 or Q89 on products containing the Something Better Natural Foods Label.
All products appear under the Something Better Natural Foods brand name. None of the products bear a UPC code. Products and sizes affected include:
  • Carob Coated Peanuts in 3.5 pound, 1 pound, 12 ounce and 8 ounce packages
  • Carob Coated Peanut Clusters in 3.5 pound and 12 ounce packages
  • Carob Coated Fruit & Nut Clusters in 3.5 pound, 1 pound and 12 ounce packages
  • Carob Coated Mixed Nuts in 3.5 pound, 1 pound and 8 ounce packages
  • Carob Coated Bridge Mix in 1 pound and 8 ounce packagers
  • Honey Nut Granola in 2 pound packages
  • 5-Grain Granola in 2 pound packages
There have been no illnesses reported to date related to our products.
The recall is part of the greater recall associated with the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). One of our suppliers informed us that several of their products had been produced using peanuts from PCA. We have ceased production and distribution of all products related to this recall and will not resume those activities until new product sourcing is acquired.
Consumers are urged to destroy the product. Consumers with questions may call Something Better Natural Foods at 269.965.1199 ext. 101. Someone will be available to help with this issue on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST. You can leave a voice mail message at any time.
