Smart Nutrition Recalls Trail Mix Peanut and Peanut Products Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 27, 2009 -- Smart Nutrition of Tumwater, WA is recalling bulk random weight packaged trail mixes and peanut products, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of America because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Products were distributed between April 14, 2008 and March 1, 2009 in the bulk food section of Smart Nutrition's retail store located in Tumwater, WA and include:

• AUNT PATTY'S CASCADE TRAIL MIX
• SUNRIDGE FARMS FRUIT & NUT TRAIL MIX
• HONEY ROASTED SPLIT PEANUTS
• WHOLE RAW REDSKIN PEANUTS

The products were sold in random weight bulk clear plastic bags with twist tie and a white label describing the contents.
Products have no expiration dates or other specific codes; UPC and/or PLU codes unknown.
No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product/these products. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut product received was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America. Smart Nutrition has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
