New Century Snacks LLC Recalls Two (2) Peanut Items Because of a Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 18, 2009 – New Century Snacks LLC of Commerce, CA is recalling two (2) bulk peanut items because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recall was initiated due to the expanded recall by Peanut Corp of America that included the peanut types used in these products. New Century Snacks LLC has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
Product was sold on a retail level in the following areas: Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California. The following lots of the following products marketed under the New Century Snacks name are being recalled:

• Item Number 100-16600 Dry Roasted and Salted Peanut Splits. It is packaged in a 5 pound clear bag with a label with the item number, description and the lot number.
  • All lot numbers starting with a "07" or "08"; and
  • Only "09006"
• Item Number 200-20090 South Seas Mix (Trail Mix with Carob Peanuts inside). It is packaged in a 4 pound clear bag with a label with the item number, description and the lot number.
  • All lot numbers starting with a "07" or "08";
  • "09006"; and
  • "09023"

Note: Replacement product is already in the marketplace with lot numbers starting from 09055. New product started shipping on February 26, 2009.
No confirmed illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.
