Marathon Ventures, Inc. announces recall of dry, roasted peanuts (foodservice pack) and Bridge Mix due to possible health risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- OMAHA, NEBRASKA– (February 3, 2009) – Marathon Ventures, Inc., today announced a voluntary recall of two items containing roasted whole peanuts which were produced by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), which is the focus of a widening Salmonella investigation by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Herman’s Nut House dry roasted peanuts were sold in 40 oz. composite (cardboard) cans and were distributed solely through a distributor of institutional food products in Omaha, Nebraska. The Chocolate Bridge Mix was sold through the Marathon Ventures, Inc. retail store, The Fresh Roast Store, located at 6171 Grover Street in Omaha, Nebraska.
There have been no illnesses or injuries reported to-date affiliated with these products. Anyone concerned about an injury/illness should contact a physician immediately. Marathon Ventures, Inc. has informed FDA of its actions and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
No other Marathon Ventures, Inc. products (including the Pear’s Gourmet, Herman’s Nut House and Private Label brands) are included in this recall.
