Krispak Recalls Two Gordon Food Service and Spartan Stores Candies With Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 6, 2009 -- Krispak, Inc, Grand Rapids, Michigan is recalling two candy items, Chocolate Covered Peanuts and Chocolate Covered Bridge Mix, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms) endocartitis and arthritis.
The GFS® Brand item was distributed to Gordon Food Service® delivery customers located in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Tennessee from January 2007 to January 31, 2009. The GFS® Brand item was also sold through GFS Marketplace® Stores located in Florida, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio from January 2007 to January 31, 2009. The package lot codes under recall are P7001 thru P9005.
The Spartan Brand products were sold through Spartan Stores and affiliated stores in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio from January 2007 through January 31, 2009. All lots with an expiration date through 11-02-09 are under recall.

SPARTAN Double-Dipped Chocolate Peanuts, net wt. 16oz. tubs, Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, MI; Code 944-280, UPC 88201 00176
SPARTAN Bridge Mix, net wt. 18oz tubs, Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, MI; Item 944-322, UPC 88201 00178
No known illnesses have been reported to date in connections with these products. This recall was initiated due to the expanded recall by Peanut Corp of America that included the peanut types used in these products, which are manufactured by GKI Foods of Brighton, Michigan.
