JL Manufacturing Announces Recall Of Candies Containing Peanuts Because Of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 3, 2009 -- JL Manufacturing, Warren, MIis voluntarily recallinga variety of candies containing peanuts because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled products were sold in retail stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
The recalled products are packaged in clear plastic tubs/containers, and range between 11 oz. and 18 oz., under various labels as listed below:

JL Manufacturing has not received any customer or consumer illness complaints related to these products to date and is working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in this important matter.
This voluntary recall has been initiated in response to a series of recalls coming from suppliers who used products coming from Peanut Corporation of America Blakely plant since January 2007. The FDA is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella targeted at that plant during this time period.

• If you have any of the products included in this recall the product should be immediately removed from consumer access and destroyed in such a way as to assure no further consumption is possible.
• If you have further distributed any of these products you should notify your customers of this recall and cease distribution immediately.
• Consumers who have purchased any of the products included in the recall are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
• Consumers with questions or concerns about their health should contact a doctor.
