FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Dallas, TX (February 2, 2009) – Hines Nut Company has initiated a recall of Honey Roasted Peanuts packaged in its Dallas, TX plant which were purchased from Peanut Corporation of America’s Blakely, GA plant.
The product is being recalled because it has the potential to be contaminated with
Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with
Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with
Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
This product was sold in Texas between October 1, 2007 and May 30, 2008.
There have been no complaints or any reported illnesses related to our products to date.
The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), a supplier to Hines Nut Company for this product, initiated a recall of honey roasted peanuts as part of an expanded recall January 28, 2009, which is why we are conducting this recall. Hines Nut Company no longer packages this product.
Hines Nut Company is notifying our direct customer(s) by phone and/or in writing of the recalled product. Consumers with recalled products may either discard them or return them Hines Nut Company for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Hines Nut Company at 1-800-561-6374 (M-F, 6:30 AM to 3:30CST). Consumers may also visit the FDA website at
www.fda.gov for an updated list of products being recall because of this problem.
