Hiland Dairy Foods Company, LLC Announces Recall of Ice Cream Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Springfield, MO (February 4, 2009) -- Hiland Dairy Foods Company has initiated a recall of various peanut-containing ice cream produced in its Springfield, MO plant because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The ice creams included in this recall are:
Hiland 1.75 qt. Square Tin Roof Sundae
Hiland ½ Gal. Square Tin Roof Sundae
Best Choice ½ Gal. Square Tin Roof Sundae
Hiland ½ Gallon Square Goo Goo Peanut Butter
Family Pak 1.75 qt. Tin Roof Sundae
Hiland 3-Gal. Tin Roof Sundae


This ice cream is sold in restaurants, retail stores and convenience stores in Southern Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
There have been no reported illnesses related to our products to date.
The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) notified our supplier of chocolate covered peanuts, that the peanuts they had received have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These peanuts have been used in the manufacture of ice cream by Hiland Dairy Foods. Hiland Dairy Foods, switched to a different peanut supplier on January 31, 2009 and any lots not listed above are not under recall. Hiland Dairy Foods uses dedicated production lines and has a long history of making safe and delicious products. We will work closely with the FDA in their on-going investigation of the potentially contaminated peanuts.
Hiland Dairy Foods is notifying our direct customers by phone and/or in writing of the recalled products that contain PCA’s peanuts. Consumers with recalled products may either discard them or return them to the store of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Hiland Dairy Foods at 1-800-492-4022 in Missouri or 1-800-641-4022 outside Missouri. Consumers may also visit the FDA website at www.fda.gov for an updated list of products being recalled because of this problem.
