Great Harvest Bread Co. of Bellingham, WA Announces a Voluntary Recall of their Cupids Crunch, Reindeer Food, and Bunny Food holiday snack mixes Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 10, 2009 -- Great Harvest Bread Co. of Bellingham, WA is recalling Cupids Crunch holiday snack mix, Reindeer Food holiday snack mix and Bunny Food holiday snack mix, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The holiday snack mixes were manufactured using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The holiday snack mixes were distributed through Great Harvest’s retail store in Bellingham, WA.
The holiday snack mixes were bagged in 4-cup holiday festive cellophane bags tied at the top with a twist tie and with a hangtag or sticker with the name of the snack mix. There are no specific UPC, Lot Codes, or expiration dates, on the package. They were sold from February 1, 2007 through February 6, 2009. These three snack mixes are the ONLY Great Harvest Products that are involved in the recall.
No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.
The recall was initiated after our supplier notified Great Harvest Bread Co. that Peanut Corporation of America manufactured the peanuts received. Great Harvest Bread Co. has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
Consumers who have purchased the three holiday snack mixes, Cupids Crunch, Reindeer Food, and Bunny Food should return them to Great Harvest for a refund or destroy them so that nobody can consume them. Consumers with questions may contact Hans Wendt of Great Harvest Bread Co. at 360-671-0873.
