Germack Pistachio Co. Recalls Sugar Free Milk Chocolate Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 11, 2009 -- Nutco, Inc., dba Germack Pistachio Co. of Detroit, MI is recalling 165 – 1 pound bags of its sugar free milk chocolate peanuts, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The product was distributed through Germack’s Detroit retail store, as well as through other retail stores and schools in Michigan and a distributor in Illinois. Direct to consumer sales were made to consumers in Colorado, Indiana, Michigan and New York.
The recalled product is in a 1 pound cellophane bag labeled: Germack Pistachio Company “SUGAR FREE” CHOCOLATE PEANUTS, net wt., 1 lb., Germack Pistachio Co., Detroit, MI, UPC 8840148000 and all of the bags under recall have a Best By date of 11/07/09.
No reports of illness related to our product have been received to date.
This recall is a result of the use of peanuts recalled by the Peanut Corportation of America being used by the candy manufacturer to make this product for us..
Consumers are requested to either destroy the product, or to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact us at 313-393-2000, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., EST.
