Pepsi and Diabetics

I know this is a kinda weird question, but has anyone ever heard of Pepsi having some kind of chemical problem for diabetics other then the tons of sugar? My brother was hospitalized several years ago and had to go through some sort of Pepsi detox. The doctor said that there was something in the chemical makeup of Pepsi that made it dangerous to diabetics.

All major soda brands are now sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, not sugar. Human physiology does not identify HFCS as a sugar (carbohydrate), but rather as a fat, and treats it accordingly. This means that the body will not release insulin so that the HFCS can be processed for use by your cells, but will just store it as excess fat. This not only has a detrimental effect on diabetics, but is a major cause of otherwise healthy people becoming type II diabetics.

Wow, something to think about next time I go grocery shopping. I'd never heard of this before but then again I guess its not something they would advertise either. That said I'm going to go get me another cup of tea.

So what can we use an alternative for soda? Some of us could not resist the taste of a good soda. From what I learned, diet sodas are more dangerous than the normal ones because of the other chemical they mix in it so that it will be called diet.

When I drink soda, it is by a company called Jones. They make a pure cane sugar soda that is really very good.

Of course this won't help a diabetic, but for those of us who just want to avoid HFCS it is great.

Other than that, really the only safe things for a diabetic are water drinks (and you can get some lightly flavoured, not artificially sweetened ones).

News to me also!

Diabetics shouldn't be drinking regular Pepsi anyway.

Not that Diet Pepsi is that great for you either.

Better to use something like Splenda, or those weird sweeteners derived from tree leaves or whatever...I forget the name.

Thanks Chef Caine,

We have given up on Soda all together. I must say I still miss the taste of a nice cold Pepsi on a summer day, but given my family history for diabetes and what I've seen them suffer, I think I'll go right on missing that Pepsi.

If I ever became a diabetic...I would probably kill myself!

I just love soda, cookies, cakes, and pies way too much!

Whenever I would try diet foods, I would go "bleh" and plus there's the thing about Nutrasweet making your brain bleed, and possibly leading to Alzheimer's.

You are so right Chef D. Plus, When I became a diabetic I found out I was allergic to these artificial sweeteners. Then I researched and found anything that has Aspartame in it like NutraSweet, Sweet and Low has arsenic in it. I was very determined to eat only natural things. I use to drink Pepsi all the time. I missed it. I found I could have ginger ale. Then I started to make my own spritzers with fruit juice and seltzer water. It wasn't long before I could go longer and longer without a fizzy drink. Now, my favorite drink is freshly made gingered mint ice tea.

Yeah, tea with a natural sweetener is a good choice!

I have been drinking a lot of tea for years now, and it always makes me feel better having a nice warm cup of my favorite tea waiting for me during the fall and winter when the weather gets really chilly.
