Ok, Exactly how long can you Freeze Ground Beef?

I won't say how long but let's just say it's been quite awhile that I've had some ground beef...still in it's original Walmart wrapping...tucked away in my freezer. My question is....how long is toooooo long?

There is a saying I use all the time - when in doubt - throw it out! Besides did you check to see if this was any of the recalled WalMart hamburger? If you ever had food poisoning ? Believe me it isn't worth the cost of that hamburger!

Let me try and get someone I know that keeps up with the recalls. She can give the info here. I know Sam's Club/Walmart hamburger was recalled here last week! Doesn't your news stations keep you informed about recalls? If not maybe we need to start a topic on here to inform people.

Wal-Mart (WMT): Beef recall at Sam's Club

Posted Oct 6th 2007 5:10PM by Douglas McIntyre
Filed under: Bad news, Consumer experience, Wal-Mart (WMT), Mattel, Inc (MAT), Agriculture
At least this recall was not for something made in China. The Sam's Club unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) said that beef from agribusiness giant Cargill might contain E. coli that cause intestinal illness.
According to the Associated Press, "Cargill learned of the issue Friday, when a compliance officer from the federal Agriculture Department visited the company's ground beef facility in Butler, Wis., Klein said. Officials had traced the patties back to that plant."
Of course, the fact that the meat came from Cargill does not do Sam's Club much good. Few consumers look beyond the brand of the retail outlet when a generic product like beef is recalled.
The news showed that no matter how vigilant U.S. companies are, they remain dependent on their suppliers both for goods and services, and, ultimately, their reputations. Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT) has learned that the hard way as it struggles to get out from the damage done to its reputation by the sale of lead-painted toys built in China.
No big retail company has enough inspectors, or can afford enough, to make certain that each item it sells is OK. The Chinese may make bad toys, but it appears that the U.S. has made some bad meat.

New Jersey Firm Recalls Ground Beef Products Due To Possible E. Coli O157:H7 Contamination
Sold at: Wal-Mart Stores
CLASS I RECALL
HEALTH RISK: HIGH

Congressional and Public Affairs Amanda Eamich (202) 720-9113
FSIS-RC-040-2007
WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2007 – Topps Meat Company, LLC, an Elizabeth, NJ, establishment, is voluntarily expanding its Sept. 25 recall to include a total of approximately 21.7 million pounds of frozen ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.
The recall is being expanded based on an additional positive product sample reported by the New York Health Department, reported illnesses and findings from a food safety assessment conducted by FSIS at the establishment.
There are currently 25 illnesses under investigation in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. An investigation carried out by the New York Department of Health in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, preceded the recall of Sept. 25.
Frozen products still in commerce with an unexpired sell-by date are subject to this recall expansion. The company applies a one-year sell-by date to their frozen products. For best quality, FSIS recommends consumers use any frozen ground beef products within three to four months of the stated sell-by date. It is important that consumers look for the recalled products and return them if found in their freezers.
The frozen ground beef products were produced on various dates between Sept. 25, 2006, and Sept. 25, 2007, and were distributed to food service institutions in the New York metropolitan area and to retail establishments nationwide.
Each package bears the establishment number "Est. 9748" inside the USDA mark of inspection as well as a sell-by date between "SEP 25 07" and "SEP 25 08."
The products subject to the original and expanded recall include:

Go to the above site and it will tell you recalls that are currently happening and it also goes back in time, even up to two to three years or more.

You can not smell, taste, or see E. coli and it can survive refrigerator temperatures, and ground beef that was frozen.

I hope that I have helped you and if by some chance you cannot find your answer then I would call the manager of Walmart and have him provide the information for you. I think that you will be able to find the information on the side that I provided.

The trouble is with freezing meat, that they will last longer depending on how little fat they contain. Meat goes off in the freezer when the fat goes rancid, so the leaner meats are freezer stable for longer. So if it is a very lean pack of meat, it wouldn't hurt to defrost it at least, and have a sniff.

Ok, I'm convinced. That meat is history. And I'm now of the mind that burnt burgers are much better then medium rare.
