Hey Lizzyap, I'm a stay at home mom right now and my husband runs his business from home so we are always around with him. Also he is strictly an outdoor dog. He's never goes in the house. My husband takes him hunting, and we've built him an addition at the side of the house that is insulated and has everything he needs. Although he is vey loved and played with he is mainly a guard dog.

If you decide to get a puppy, be sure to get one when you are on vacation
or something and can be home with him to train him. Especially a dog
that stays in the house which most dogs need to. YOu are right, a pug is
probably not for you. Altho they are an A1 companion dog. They need
someone that is home most of the time because they get very sad not to
have companionship. Mine follows me around all day long and wants to
sit near me. I thought they were couch potatoes but no way. These pugs
have alot of energy and run around like crazy and are into everything.
He is the most difficult dog I have had to train in my life and I have
always had dogs. You can only get something out of them if you treat
them like sugar and give lots of treats and good boys.
They don't do anything thru punishment or yelling at them or commanding.
Most dogs will learn commands. Mine has also been very difficult to
house train. Lately he has been very good. I don't think they are good
for young children because they are very mouthy as puppies. But they
are great for an older child if the child has an interest in them. Nothing is
as cute as a pug puppy and as endearing. They really talk to you and
interact and tease you and are very smart. I heard golden retrievers are
very good with children. But they are a very large dog and you need to
be able to exercise them etc. Good luck.
