Halo-Halo
Author: Tagaluto

Description:
"Halo" is a Filipino word which means mix together. So to translate "halo-halo" in English word for word, its mix-mix. Halo-halo is the Filipino version of fruit salad. This is an appetizer that is very popular in the Philippines. Each household can make their own kind of halo-halo for you can mix anything in it but there are the main ingredients that should be there in order to be called a halo-halo.
Ingredients:
  1. Crushed Ice
  2. Condensed Milk
  3. Jack fruit
  4. Sweetened Plaintain (Saba)
  5. Ripe Mangoes
  6. Coconut Meat (Macapuno)
  7. Cooked Mung Beans
  8. Cooked Ube (Purple Potato or Sweet Yam)
  9. Cantaloupe
  10. Cooked Yellow Corn
  11. Pili Nuts
  12. Sweetened Beans (red beans or chick peas)
  13. Toasted Pinipig (pounded dried rice)
  14. Honey
  15. Ice Cream (usually one scoop at the top)
  16. Leche Flan (sweetened milk custard)
Preparation:
  1. Mix it all together
Instructions:
  1. Crushed Ice. This is the main ingredient of the halo-halo. Without this ingredient, the halo-halo is just a plain fruit salad.
  2. Milk. The most common milk that Filipinos are using is the condensed milk or sweetened milk. Sometimes, we are using evaporated milk. These milks are all in liquid form. I never saw someone mixing powdered milk but you can try but the result is not good I think.
  3. Variety of Fruits. Now a halo-halo cannot be complete without any fruits. If the milk and the ice only, then its just cold milk.

Oooh, it sounds excellent, and the picture is great, hehe. What's the purple stuff though? And yeah, ladyt, you can get all that stuff here. I would look in the organic fruits section, of your grocery, and the cultural foods aisle also. I've never had this before, so I'm definitely trying it some time. Do you think it would come out alright with less crushed ice, more ice cream, and a little bit of milk, mixed as that part-- a little thinner than milk shake consistency?

A jack fruit looks like this:

and the tree looks like this:

From the research I made, Jack fruits are rarely available fresh in the US for they are mostly grown in Asian countries, although it can be found in Asian grocery stores canned already.

And the good thing in halo-halo is that you can mix any fruits that you like and you can experiment. The difference between fruit salad and halo-halo is that halo-halo has crushed ice while fruit salad has salad cream.

The purple stuff is the Cooked Ube (Purple Potato or Sweet Yam). I'm not sure if this also available in the US. But as I always say, you make an experiment with any available fruits that you have. Just don't mix sour fruit with sweet fruits. I never tried it but I think it will end up bad.

Wow! I think this is a special Halo-halo tagaluto. When I am preparing halo-halo for my family I want it to have more ice and milk and less fruits.

You can buy jackfruit in a jar at most Asian stores. I use it all the time to make turon. You should be able to find everyting else at an Asian store or large supermarket, but if you can't, like all Pilipino recipes, just wing it!

BTW, I have never considerd halo halo an appetizer. It's dessert, or a special treat, like an ice cream sundae or a banana split on a hot summer afternoon or evening in the US.

My son used to love it in the afternoons. His grandmother's neighbor used to sell it from their front yard, and he was always begging pesos from relatives gathered for their share of his mother's balik bayan (or balik yabang? ) so he could go buy one.
