Easy White Bread
|
|
Author:

Time:
About 3 hours.
Difficulty:
Easy
Serving Size:
1 loaf.
|
Description: A simple to make loaf that tastes so much better than any store bought bread.
|
| Ingredients: |
- One packet dry, fast acting yeast.
- Three cups of bread flour (more may be needed, add as needed).
- One cup warm water.
- One and a half teaspoons of sugar.
- Two teaspoons of salt.
- Two tablespoons olive oil.
|
| Preparation: |
- Dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Leave to stand for about fifteen minutes-mixture should become frothy.
|
| Instructions: |
- Mix flour and salt in a bowl, add oil and rub it into the flour. Make a well in the center of the bowl and carefully pour in the yeast mix. Mix with a spoon at first and try and incorporate as much of the flour as you can.
- When the mix is becoming doughy, begin to mix with your hands until it is starting to form a good ball. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for approximately ten minutes, until the dough becomes stretchy and soft.
- More flour may be added at this point-it isn't ridged, more important is not having an overly wet dough, but you don't want it too dry either!
- Cover with a clean towel and leave in a warm place to rise for about 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Punch dough down, roll and put into a loaf pan, slice the top.
- Cover again and allow to rise for another 50 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Bake loaf in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for approximately 45 minutes. When done, loaf should be golden brown and sound hollow when you rap on the bottom with your knuckles.
- I like to serve it straight from the oven with butter.

We love homemade bread. My husband bakes bread twice a week and I've copied this recipe for him., I love bread baking days. Am always ready when it comes out of the oven. Thanks for the recipe.
Hugs from Mommalou

I have never made homemade bread before, and I stopped eating white bread store bought long ago after I found out they bleached them.

It's the flour that is bleached, not the bread. And that means that any products that are made with white rather than whole wheat flour are bleached. That includes cakes and so on.
See wiki article here;

It's not really scary stuff, but not as healthy as eating whole wheat flour.

*drools* This is the perfect excuse to use my oven during the day...I think we will be having BLTs for brunch this weekend. Yummy. Not to find my loaf pan.

I like your recipee, I am not big on white bread though. It shouldn't hurt to substitute whole wheat flour to suit my diet.

What about adding some wheat germ or bran to it? I like to add healthy stuff to any recipe so I can get my kids to eat better. Or even whole grains.

Adding something like flax seed would be better, and substituting is not good. The problem is that whole wheat flour needs to have extra gluten added to it. That can be ok for some, but would make my stomach very upset with me!
And you do not need a loaf pan to make this. You can shape it into any shape, or just dollop it on a baking sheet!

My Dh Has Been Baking Bread And Trying Different Ingredients. The One He Does Now Has Wheat Bran And Flax Seed Meal, But I Don't Know The Amounts. Since I Have Had To Cut Down (to About 1/10 The Daily Allowance) He Has Come Up With One That Is Really Good. I Love It. I Pass All The Bread Recipes To Him To Experiment Or Try. He's Really Getting Good At It Too. Keep The Recipes Coming.
