Readers love their odd 'browsing' cookbooks

Source: Rocky Mountain News

We asked Rocky readers to tell us about their odd, rare keepsake cookbooks. To see a selection of some of their favorites:
"I absolutely love cookbooks. I have many but I do not feel guilty about it because I use them. One that I love that might not be really well known is Best of the Best from Colorado. Favorite recipes in this book are Chicken Chile Soup and Fudge Truffle Cheesecake."
- Diane Weston, Parker
"My hands-down absolute favorite browsing cookbook is The Nero Wolfe Cookbook (Viking Press, 1973) by Rex Stout who wrote more than 50 mysteries starring heavyweight epicurean Nero Wolfe. Most recipes in this cookbook are preceeded by a paragraph or two from one of the books although, truthfully, I wonder if I would ever have the time to prepare any recipe."
- Pam Farrar, Denver
"Mrs. Rasmussen's Book of One-Arm Cookery by Mary Lasswell. This is a collection of recipes from Mrs. Rasmussen, one of the heroines of Lasswell's series of hilarious novels about a trio of elderly ladies. The ladies were inveterate beer-drinkers and the test for almost every recipe was whether it would 'go good with the beer.'"
- Connie North, Denver
"Two of my favorites are The New Joys of Jell-O and Heavenly Dishes From the Wesley United Methodist Women of Corpus Christi. Both have great Jell-O recipes needless to say. I also have a Jell-O mold collection!"
- Molly Lu Castleberry, Denver
"I am a collector of cookbooks and have bookshelves full of over 325 volumes. My all-time favorite is The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook. My sister attended the Antoinette Pope School of Fancy Cookery in Chicago in 1966. She gave me this cookbook. All the recipes tasted like what my mother cooked from cucumbers in sour cream to potato pancakes."
- Carol Johnson, Lakewood
"I want to share with you my secret cherished cookbooks: my great-grandmother's collection of her own recipes, hand-written in Edwardian script; my grandmother's recipes clipped from various printed media; and my mother's recipe cards bequeathed to me when I flew the nest. I cherish these for the connection they give me to these women."
- Kathryn Mann, Arvada
"Among my cookbook faves are Sri Owen's Indonesian Regional Cooking and Cooking With Gourmet Grains from the Stone Buhr people."
- Susan Permut, Monument
"Mine is called The Inflight Services CookBook from United Airlines dating back to 1979-1980. Most of the recipes are from flight attendants, most of whom are now retired."
- Anamarie Wostrchill, Centennial
