Article: Eat what Bankers eat

The Outer Banks Cookbook by Elizabeth Wiegand

Eat what the Bankers eat

By Andrea Weigl, Staff Writer

Elizabeth Weigand, the author of a new Outer Banks cookbook, will speak at 7 p.m. June 18 at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh. Weigand also will offer samples from her new cookbook, "The Outer Banks Cookbook: Recipes & Traditions from North Carolina's Barrier Island." For more information, call (919) 828-7912 or go to www.quailridgebooks.com.
Speaking of Quail Ridge, the store has a couple of other readings that might interest foodies:
  • 7 p.m. June 25, Dale and John Shelton Reed, who edited "Cornbread Nation 4: The Best of Southern Food Writing," along with contributors Marcie Ferris and Michael McFee.
  • 7 p.m. July 10, Virginia Willis, author of "Bon Appetit, Y'all."
Cooking local
Debbie Moose, a food columnist for The News & Observer, will be teaching a seminar on eating what's in season.
Moose will teach attendees how to prepare recipes using locally grown vegetables and eggs at 2 p.m. June 21 at the Ten Thousand Villages store at Cameron Village in Raleigh. Food samples will be served from Graham Kerr's cookbooks, "Simply in Season," and "Simply in Season: Children's Cookbook." Moose also will sell copies of her book, "Deviled Eggs: 50 Recipes from Simple to Sassy." For more information, call the store at (919) 821-1100.
Award winner
Our very own Jean Anderson won a James Beard award this weekend for her cookbook, "A Love Affair with Southern Cooking," published by HarperCollins. Anderson, who grew up in Raleigh and lives in the Triangle, won in the Americana cookbook category. She has written more than 20 cookbooks. The James Beard Foundation, whose awards are the Oscars of the culinary set, loves Anderson: she won the 2003 James Beard Award for Best Cookbook in the tools and techniques category; in 1992, she was named "Editor of the Year;" in 1994, she was inducted into the James Beard Who's Who in Food & Beverage in America; and in 1999, she was inducted into the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame.
To find out about Anderson's upcoming book events, go to www.jeanandersoncooks.com.
