In a nutshell: Jennifer McCann goes international after writing the plain old “Vegan Lunch Box” a year ago. The book offers an eclectic variety of flavorful and generally quick-to-prepare lunch options for vegans. Even if you’re a carnivore, you might find something out of the box, as it were, that piques your interest.
Features: 125 international lunch ideas that could conceivably appeal to kids and adults alike. It’s a down-to-earth book that doesn’t speak down to readers as some other cookbooks do. And McCann does a good job of mixing some exotic with some more mainstream recipes. It’s not all one or the other.
Minuses: Those looking for a pretty cookbook will be disappointed. It features very few photos. The organization doesn’t seem to make much sense. McCann features vignettes on geographic regions with the names of recipes. But the actual recipes appear later in the book, grouped according to course — appetizer, main, dessert, etc.
We tried: Mango Noodles
The verdict: This is an easy, bright, tasty dish. It combines a whole bunch of nutrition with a whole lot of flavor — fruit, veggies, soy protein with a nice sweet-salty sauce. Meat-eaters might not even miss the beef or chicken. The noodles were great hot, but could even be eaten cold at lunch. All in all, it’s something I could add to the weekly rotation.
