I'm not in any position to say whether or not you can afford them or if you should shell out that much, but my opinion (since you asked!) is that if he is sincere about wanting to become a chef, then you should strongly take this into consideration when deciding. Anybody that I know who does well at what they do, they usually did it as a hobby before they were trained for it.

Also, you could buy a small part of a set and promise more for next christmas.
